About the event
Te Titoki Mataora MedTech Seminar Series #6
Real stories. Real impact. Real pathways from research to MedTech innovation.
Proudly hosted by the Te Tītoki Mataora Future Leaders Module, this national seminar series spotlights emerging and established MedTech leaders who are turning academic research into real-world health solutions. This session is for PhD students, postdocs, clinician-scientists, engineers, and anyone curious about translating research into impact.
Locations: Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington & Online (Hybrid)
Programme
12:00 – 12:05: Welcome + housekeeping
12:05 – 12:30: Four Lessons from the Road, Prof John Windsor (University of Auckland)
No patient was ever cured by publishing a paper. Professor John Windsor, a surgeon, scientist and entrepreneur at the University of Auckland, has worked on multiple MedTech ventures without leaving academia. He argues that MedTech starts and ends with Med because clinicians play a vital role in shaping a project, from defining the problem to the adoption of a solution. Through four stories of apparent setbacks (a vanished market, a related problem, a competitor, and a trial that never happened), he draws out practical lessons for early- and mid-career researchers.
12:30 – 12:40: The Te Titoki Mataora Clinical Translation module and how it may help EMCRs, Prof Robyn Whittaker (Clinical Director, HealthX, Te Whatu Ora & Medtech-iQ Tāmaki Makaura, University of Auckland)
Robyn will talk about the work of the Clinical Translation module to support researchers in the Medtech-iQ network. This includes providing connections, organising events, office hours, TIKI tours at hospitals/community, and the clinical experience programme. She will be happy to answer questions and hear ideas/suggestions from future leaders for other support that may be needed.
12:40 – 13:00: Hybrid discussion
13:00 – 13:05: Closing
